Solar Cycle 25 is ramping up. That means excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/solar-cycle-25-is-here-nasa-noaa-scientists-explain-what-that-means\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Frequency Radio Propagation,<\/a><br \/>\nThis is good news for Amateur Radio DX operations (long distance propagation and communication on the Amateur Radio HF bands)<\/p>\n<h3>Solar Cycle 25&nbsp;Predictions<\/h3>\n<p>The start of a new Solar Cycle (25) means there will be&nbsp;increasing activity and more sunspots until roughly July&nbsp;2025.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> initial extended forecast<\/strong> <strong>is that Solar Cycle 25 will below average, quiet, and cool.<\/strong>&nbsp;This is very similar to its predecessor Solar Cycle 24\u2014the weakest cycle since record-keeping began in&nbsp;1755.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/solar-cycle-25-preliminary-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"caps\">NOAA<\/span>\/<span class=\"caps\">NASA<\/span> and international experts<\/a>: \u201cCycle 25 will be similar in size to Cycle 24, preceded by a long, deep minimum. Solar Cycle 25 may have a slow start, but is anticipated to peak with solar maximum occurring between 2023 and 2026, and a sunspot range of 95 to 130. This is well below the average number of sunspots, which typically ranges from 140 to 220 sunspots per solar&nbsp;cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Specifically, the experts predicted: a peak in July, 2025 (+\/- 8 months), with a smoothed sunspot number (<span class=\"caps\">SSN<\/span>) of&nbsp;115.<\/li>\n<li>The panel agreed that Cycle 25 will be average in intensity and similar to Cycle 24, and its peak will be similar as&nbsp;well.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, the panel concurred that solar minimum between Cycles 24 and 25 will occur in April, 2020 (+\/- 6&nbsp;months).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Contrary to <span class=\"caps\">NOAA<\/span>\/<span class=\"caps\">NASA<\/span>\u2019s models,&nbsp;there have been more recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11207-020-01723-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a>&nbsp;with models which suggest&nbsp;that Solar Cycle 25 could be one of the strongest since record-keeping&nbsp;began.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/sunspotcounts-noaa.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"949\" height=\"295\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"5d2add94-9f33-4339-81f9-68b1de723fe1\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is very exiting.
